How To Photograph A Family Portrait
Friday, April 20th, 2012Family portrait photography often demands for a more formal pose, which captures unity-an essential attribute that keeps a family intact. To capture the essence of being a family, professional portrait photographers use several technical and non-technical elements.
Technically speaking, how the portrait would look depends on the composition. Composition refers to how the key elements are put together to make up an interesting picture, or in this case to highlight the family’s unique personality as a group. On the not so technical aspect of portrait photography, professional photographers attain great composition by requesting the subjects to use coordinated color tones for their clothing. Formal attires are already available in some photography studios that their clients can use, particularly those that photograph a group in their formal clothing.
Although corporate attires are typical for formal family portrait, photographers do use various approaches to achieve a formal look without wearing tuxedos or corporate dresses. Thus, formal portrait can also be achieved by requesting the family to wear clothes that depict their culture or religion, or anything that distinguishes them as a family.
For example, a Muslim family can wear clothing that is distinct to Islam. Women in Islam should wear modest garments like long shorts and skirts or the more traditional jilbab, a high-necked, lose robe that covers the arms and legs. Again, it is important that the family have a unified color of clothing.
Another crucial pointer in photographing a family portrait is to highlight the individual personality of the members of the family. It is essential that photographers make sure that each member of the family is comfortable about their clothing and overall appearance. If this is not achieved, the great composition the photographer has imagined for the family will go to waste. A perfect family portrait is only as compelling as each individual in the picture.
